Hainan Medical University has established a high-level research platform composed of several provincial and ministerial key laboratories. Generally, there are three key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, one engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, one key laboratory of National Health Commission (NHC) and seven provincial key laboratories. The key laboratories of the Ministry of Education are the Key Laboratory of Emergency and Trauma Research, the Key Laboratory of Tropical Translational Medicine, and the Key Laboratory of Reproductive Health Diseases Research and Translation. The engineering research center of the Ministry of Education is the Engineering Research Center of Tropical Medicine. The key laboratory of NHC is the Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Control.
The provincial key laboratories include Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Medicinal Plant Research and Development, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Human Reproduction and Genetics, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tumor Occurrence and Intervention, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Trauma and Disaster Rescue Research , Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Brain Research and Translation, Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Cardiovascular Disease Research, and Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Sports and Health Promotion (social science).
There are two joint laboratories: the International Center for Aging and Cancer (ICAC) (jointly established by Hainan Medical University, Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, and the Samuel Wexman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF)) and Joint laboratory of Hainan Medical University and Hongkong University.
There are two sharing research platforms: Hainan Provincial Science and Technology Park of Drug Development and Research (Hainan Provincial Drug Safety Evaluation Research Center) and Science and Technology Experimental Center of HNMU.
In addition, there are 5 provincial clinical medical research centers, one international joint research center, one provincial repository, 8 provincial engineering research centers (5 are newly approved), 3 key laboratory of Haikou city, 9 academician workstations, 8 academician innovation centers, and 2 post-doctoral research stations.
From 2018-2023, the university has received a total of 40 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, including six first prizes for Natural Science in Hainan Province and one first prize for Innovation from the China Invention Association's "Invention and Entrepreneurship Award." A total of 490 scientific research projects have been funded by ministerial or provincial scientific research foundations. And 276 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China have been approved. Recent years, approximately ten thousand papers have been published in frontier academic journals, of which 2,891 papers are indexed in SCI and 2,279 indexed in Chinese core journals. Notably, there are four papers have been published in the top academic journals including Cell, Nature and Science. In recent five years, the average annual research funding granted to the university is 50.4773 million yuan, with an average of 41.7069 million yuan dedicated to governmental research funding.
HNMU has published six academic journals including the Journal of Hainan Medical University (Chinese version and English version), Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine (English version), Asia Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine (English version), Journal of Acute Disease (English version) and Asian Pacific Journal of Reproduction (English version).
